Ghostbusters: The Video Game

Ghostbusters Xbox 360Today I’m going to talk about the newest movie game to hit the market, Ghostbusters.

As a huge Ghostbusters fan, I picked this up as soon as I got my 360, and I was not disappointed. Well not entirely.

The game itself has great music, and excellent voice acting and writing; the game play itself is excellent as well, sadly it doesn’t last long, and on the harder difficulties, can get downright exasperating.

The boss of the third chapter is probably one of the hardest bosses in any game i have ever played, even harder than fighting Psycho Mantis with your controller in the 1st controller port.  The reason for this is that when the boss knocks you down with his special attack, he spams the attack so you can’t get back up.  and he loves to use it right when you are in the middle of reviving one of your teammates who cannot seem to dodge his attacks. On Medium or Hard difficulty he is nearly impossible to beat, even harder than the final boss of the game.

Another gripe i have with the game aside from difficulty, is the fact that only the first boss is able to be trapped, all the rest are “Class VII Deities” and must be destroyed.  I feel like i am fighting tons of Gozers rather than actually busting ghosts.

Also one of the coolest items in the game, the “super slammer” trap on the ecto 1, basically a souped up ghost trap, only gets to be used in one part of the game.  It was a fun way to deal with tons of ghosts, but sadly you use it once, and it would have been fun to use it in multiple battles.

They could have added a lot more to the game for side content.  The game plays out exactly like a Ghostbusters movie.  Something strange happens, we go on an unrelated ghostbusting run, then get pulled into the story through various “calls.”  I would have loved to do some side missions to make money like they do in the first movie, to pad out some of the game.  I understand it doesn’t really work with the story the way it is, but it would have been fun.  I would love to see them make a sequel to this where the focus is more on calls than it is on some overarching story. Have it play more like GTA than a movie game.

Overall however, i feel the game succeeded where most movie games fail… It provided solid game play, an excellent story and a feeling of satisfaction when you finish it.  I do not regret buying this game, as it was extremely entertaining and I am looking forward to playing the on-line component of the game.’
